Take care of your hip bag! Brush lightly then rinse with warm soapy water as soon as you have a stain. If you have mud (on a mountain bike for example) you can clean it with a karcher at the same time as your bike (be careful with the distance and the pressure)! The outer fabric is perfectly waterproof, as long as the roll-top is properly closed.
